When Empress Elizabeth Petrovna, daughter of Peter the Great, died in 1762, she was succeeded by her mentally weak nephew, Czar Peter III. He was deposed within months by his German-born wife, Catherine, and a group of nobles. The 17-year-old Grand Duke Peter had married 16-year-old Catherine in 1745. As EMPRESS CATHERINE II she organized the armies under her control and successfully made Russia a leading world power, conquering the Turks twice (1768-1774, 1787-1792), acquiring a gateway to the Black Sea (1774). She excelled in foreign policy, adding over 200,000 square miles to the Russian empire including the Crimea (1783) and parts of Poland (1772, 1773, 1795). Lightly soiled. Slightly irregular edges.
