This draft bears 153 words written in Carter's hand, including this attack on Republicans: "use line about every mistake-- Vietnam, Chile, CIA excesses, etc. - happened because plotted in secrecy without U.S. people". Typed Manuscript, 8p. No date, but 1976. Eight pages from a draft of his July 15, 1976 speech accepting the Democratic nomination for President. Pages are numbered 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11 and 14 (concluding page of speech). Not signed, but bearing 153 words in Carter's handwriting. Adviser STUART EIZENSTADT is mentioned frequently by Carter ("Stu") on these pages. In the Carter White House, Eizenstadt served as Assistant to the President for Domestic Affairs and Policy. The following are quotes from the eight pages, Carter's handwritten edits and comments, and related excerpts from Carter's acceptance address delivered at the Democratic National Convention in Madison Square Garden on July 15, 1976. From Typed Manuscript (page 5): "Our people want jobs, too, and a stable economy, and we have outlined a program that combines incentives to increased hiring by the private sector, with public employment programs that will help clean up our urban areas and preserve our environment." At the left, Carter has handwritten: "we need a stronger/statement on jobs, inflation/& unemployment". From Carter's actual speech, delivered at Madison Square Garden on the evening of July 15, 1976: "I believe that anyone who is able to work ought to work-and ought to have a chance to work. Glynn Roehr, Neenah, Wisconsin. Daniels' original letter to Roehr on "Monitor" stationery, signed for Daniels by a secretary, is present. Roehr wanted to have his local newspapers reprint "A Time for Choosing," an article by Ronald Reagan published in "Monitor" earlier that year. Daniels gives his permission but suggests "that you might also request from Mr. Reagan his permission as the author of the article to have it republished. To save you the trouble, therefore, I am sending him a copy of this letter on which he can note his reply, together with an envelope addressed to you." Reagan has handwritten, in red ink, his consent: "Permission granted/Sept. 30 - 1963/Ronald Reagan." With an 8 page, 8.5" x 11" folded reprint of "A Time for Choosing" from "Monitor." On October 27, 1964, Reagan delivered a Goldwater campaign speech to an audience in Phoenix, Arizona. Now known as "The Speech," it was also entitled "A Time for Choosing" and incorporated many of the thoughts and ideas expressed by Reagan in his "Monitor" article. Three items. Fine condition....
