On April 21, 1918, Baron MANFRED VON RICHTOFEN, the highest scoring pilot of WWI, was killed in a Fokker Dr.I triplane during combat with No. 209 Squadron, RAF. Captain A. ROY BROWN was credited with the victory. Richtofen, chasing the plane piloted by Captain Brown and being pursued by a plane piloted by another Canadian, was caught by a bullet fired by Brown as he stood and turned to check the tail of his plane. Having fallen in Allied territory, the Red Baron was taken from his plane and given a funeral worthy of one of their own fallen aces by the Allies. The pallbearers were all Captains and Squadron Commanders, as Richthofen himself had been. Creased. Lightly smudged "A" and "R". Chipped at lower left blank corner, ¾-inch diagonal tear at upper margin, which has 2 pinhead-sized holes and light stain. Slightly shaded background behind signature.
